The Pharmacy department

With a staff of over 60 people, we are a core part of the hospital structure and an integral part of the ward team. Our department covers different areas: Central Dispensary, Technical Services Unit, Medicines Information and Stores.

Clinical Service - Pharmacy provides a clinical service to the inpatient wards including a medicines reconciliation service, working closely with doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals to provide the best possible care for our patients. Pharmacists ensure that the drug charts and discharge summaries are clinically validated, appropriate medicine is supplied and also counsel patients on their medications. They provide advice on dosing in impaired renal and liver function and on interactions, to ensure safe and effective prescribing according to local and national standards. Pharmacy is an integral part of the ward team and our main focus is on achieving the “80% Patient Facing “Target set by the Carter report.

Dispensary – The automated dispensary provides medication to all areas of the trust and also to a number of external hospitals. The dispensary is a busy, friendly area of the Pharmacy department dispensing a wide range of medication covering a variety of specialities.

Technical Services Unit (TSU) – Prepares chemotherapy for our Oncology/Haematology day unit dispenses Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and supplies other high risk medication to the hospital. The staff work closely with day unit, including the Haematology/Oncology pharmacists who provide clinical support.
Medicines Information – provides advice and support to all hospital staff and patients. The MI pharmacist deals with a variety of different queries, utilising the most appropriate resources available.
