The Pharmacy department
We believe we have a friendly and forward thinking pharmacy department that provides services alongside the Trust and national plans. We provide a pharmaceutical service from our establishment of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, student pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants, and support staff. We are continuously developing and maintaining work streams, introducing new technologies and implementing better ways of working, to always ensure best care is provided for patients.
The department has opportunities for all types of staff, including post-graduate qualifications for qualified pharmacists e.g. non-medical prescribing.
The department has a high profile in the Trust on medicines management initiatives and are actively involved with the Drug and Therapeutics Committee, Ethics Committee, Research Committee, and the Training and Education Group.
Dispensary - The dispensary provides a seven day service to the hospital, supplying medication for both inpatient and outpatient use. As well as dispensing established therapies there is active participation in clinical trials.
Clinical pharmacy service - Each ward receives a daily visit from a clinical pharmacist and a medicines management technician. The pharmacy staff work closely with the other members of the multi-disciplinary team to provide best possible care for patients. Pharmacy is an integral part of the ward team and the current focus is working to achieve the “80% Patient Facing “ target set by the Carter report. The clinical team meet frequently for case discussion, peer review and training sessions.
Pharmacy production and cancer services - The pharmacy prepares a number of cytotoxic and biologic agents for use in the hospital. The national dose banding tables for chemotherapy agents have been adopted, rationalising doses patients receive and allowing the most common doses to be bought readymade.
Quality control - All our activities are carried out to high standards and under strict controls with our quality assurance programme.
Medicines information - There is an active medicines information service, answering enquiries from within the Trust and contributing where necessary to guideline development and the support of drugs being added to the hospital formulary.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is an established 488 bed general hospital which provides healthcare services to West and North Norfolk in addition to parts of Breckland, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire, an area of more than 750 square miles with a population of approximately 331,000 people.
The hospital provides a comprehensive range of specialist, acute, obstetrics and community-based services. Although the main hospital complex is on the outskirts of King's Lynn, Norfolk, the Trust is committed to providing care closer to our patients' homes with some specialist services and clinics provided in community facilities such as the North Cambridgeshire hospital in Wisbech, Fakenham Medical Centre, Swaffham Community hospital and St Georges Medical Centre in Littleport.
